Acts 1:8 (CSB)
8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come on you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
The indwelling of the Holy Spirit results in being a witness for Jesus Christ. The disciples knew Jesus. They had been around him for years. They had seen what he did and heard his teachings; however, their proximity to Jesus was not their qualification to be a witness. The indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit qualified them to be a witness. The indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit qualifies you to be a witness.
How many times do we make excuses for not witnessing to others? We feel nervous and timid. We don’t want to upset people and we want their approval and acceptance. Sometimes, we use laws to excuse us from our obligation to be witnesses. Can I tell you something? This may sting a little – to not be a witness for Jesus Christ is denying the power of the Holy Spirit. To not be witnessing for Jesus Christ, to not be sharing the gospel with people, is quenching the Holy Spirit. You are literally denying the power of the Holy Spirit in your life. We are not to quench, to deny the power of the Holy Spirit.
The word “power” in Acts 1:8 is the same word used when Jesus did miracles. The same miracle working power is in us through the Holy Spirit’s indwelling. If effectiveness depends on my power and ability, sure I am nervous. I would be afraid I would mess it all up. However, it is not about my power and effectiveness. It is not in my ability or inability to speak and convince others. It is not in my ability to make theological arguments or in my knowledge of the original languages. It is all about the power of the Holy Spirit in me. It is all about the power of the Holy Spirit in you. Do not quench the Holy Spirit. Allow the Holy Spirit indwelling presence to empower you to be an effective witness for Jesus Christ.
